The only reasonably well-preserved medieval Dominican priory to survive in Northern Ireland, it was founded in the mid-13th century. The upper parts of the nave, its westward extension and the north aisle arcade date from a 14th-century rebuild. The friary was suppressed in 1541 and burned in 1572 by Sir Brian O’Neill. Hugh Montgomery, 1st Viscount of Ards, refurbished the church in the 17th century, rebuilding the north aisle and adding the bell tower.
Visitors can explore this significant historic site through self-guided experiences, discovering its architectural features and layered history at their own pace.
Part of the “Centenary of Care,” marking 100 years since the introduction of legislation to protect Northern Ireland’s historic monuments, the site highlights the ongoing work to care for and share these important places for future generations.
