It seems like the world has lost the run of itself, but we didn't start the fire. To prepare for potential paroxysm, Normal Cinema Club and EastSide Arts Festival are teaming up to present WHEN THE WIND BLOWS. The coming apocalypse can perhaps be overcome with adequate preparation and a positive mindset!
Jim and Hilda Bloggs are the image of English bliss. Happily retired and living in the country, they are slightly worried about the news on the radio. As international tensions rise, they prepare for a worst case scenario with the help of government-issued pamphlets. Keep calm and carry on they say! But how long does a nuclear winter last? How long can you carry on for?
This devastating classic animation, based on the Raymond Briggs graphic novel, is a chilling look at the real consequences of nuclear warfare. No matter who wins, we all lose.
Before the feature we will screen THE LAST GAMMON by Elmaz Ekrem Littlewood, which considers apocalyptic anxieties in our current 'culture war' era. Dave is a proper geezer and cares about no one and nothing in this world, apart from his beloved bird. When judgement day comes and the end is nigh, he simply ignores it and embarks on a perilous journey to find the perfect gammon for his beloved avian's favourite breakfast.
