Shandon Park Mound: A Medieval Earthwork in Belfast, is one of Belfast's few surviving medieval earthworks, located on elevated ground in the Knock area and accessed via a pathway between residential properties.
The mound is thought to be a motte—an Anglo-Norman castle mound—strategically positioned to command extensive views of the surrounding landscape, emphasising its defensive purpose.
Its name, derived from the Irish"sean dún" meaning "old fort," suggests the possibility that the site may have even earlier, pre-Norman origins. Nearby features, such as Old Knock graveyard, add further historical context, indicating that the area has long been an important point of settlement.
Today, the mound remains a striking reminder of Belfast's hidden medieval past.
This is an unstaffed open site, accessible for visitors wishing to explore this archaeological feature.
