The Silence of Sewing EHOD 2026

The Silence of Sewing is a welcoming, hands-on workshop inspired by Northern Ireland's rich linen heritage. Using fabrics and trimmings from the curator's own collection, visitors will learn simple stitches and begin their own creative sewing journey.

No experience is required—just come along, take a seat, and enjoy the calming rhythm of sewing, where the gentle 'pop' of the needle and 'whoosh' of thread create a uniquely relaxing experience.

Participants will be provided with everything needed, including a wooden hoop, needle, fabrics and threads, and can stay for as long as they wish during the session. You may even find yourself stitching onto existing embroidery, creating something entirely new from pieces of the past.

Suitable for ages 8+, with 20 places available each day.

Reflecting the theme of Heritage at Risk, this project explores how sewing—once an everyday skill taught from an early age—has become less common, and how it can be revived through creative engagement.

Demonstrations of traditional techniques such as Mountmellick embroidery will highlight this rich heritage, while the curator shares insights into her own journey and the revival of embroidery within modern creative culture. Reference materials and guidance will be available, making this an enjoyable and inspiring introduction to a traditional skill brought back to life.
