Original shipyard artefacts, immersive digital heritage experiences and self-guided tours through the historic Drawing Offices. This year’s EHOD theme, celebrates the importance of restoring and protecting historic places for future generations. Once the busy heart of one of the world’s most famous shipyards, the Harland & Wolff Headquarters building stood empty for many years before being carefully restored and brought back to life as Titanic Hotel Belfast. Today many original features remain, such as floor tiles and ornate moulding which were also used on Harland & Wolff’s iconic passenger ships and Olympic class liners. Throughout the weekend visitors can enjoy a free self-guided heritage tour and discover floorplans tracking the building’s evolution as the shipyard expanded, original partnership agreements, and a draft of RMS Titanic’s building certificate. There will also be original tools, objects and artefacts connected to Belfast’s shipbuilding past on display. Highlights include the Thompson Works Theodolite and tools belonging to a Shipwright, Joiner, Caulker, Welder and Draughtsman, some believed to have been used during the construction of RMS Titanic. The Maritime Mile Heritage Lab will also return, showcasing innovative digital heritage experiences, where visitors can interact with historic maritime figures through AI storytelling and engage with local shipyard stories through holographic interpretation. Visitors will also have the opportunity to share their own memories and reflections through an interactive heritage screen celebrating the Belfast Historic Waterfront.
